Not only is today an On The Set update, but it’s all Cinco de Drinko! I know, I know, it’s supposed to be cinco de mayo, or “the fifth of may”. But really, it’s almost like St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday that once had meaning but now is just an excuse for the nation to drown it’s sorrows…..
Some may feel that I’m being a bit brash with my statements, but it’s true. Let’s run through some of the facts about Cinco de Mayo real quick.
-Ask most Americans what Cinco de Mayo is about and they’ll most likely tell you it’s Mexico’s Independence Day. You should slap them and then inform them that it’s actually to celebrate a battle victory where the Mexican Army defeated some French troops back in the 1800’s.
-It is “observed” as a holiday in the states nationwide, more than it is in Mexico.
Soooooo, it’s technically not an American holiday, and technically not a too important holiday to Mexico. Huh, I’m sorry, excuse to drink?
Here’s an interesting little bit of information though. Soooooo, the Mexicans defeated the French, right? Why were the French in North America attacking Mexico? Mexico was in shambles after a couple of it’s own past wars, and they weren’t well equipped. The French wanted to take over Mexico and establish a base in Mexico.
Why would the French want a base in Mexico? Well, around the time that the French were doing this, America was having the Civil War. Little known fact, Napoleon was backing the Confederate Army and supporting them in the Civil War. Attempting to weaken our Country and eventually take us over. Fun stuff, right?
Sooooo, Americans, enjoy this Mexican celebration of victory, because indirectly it may have helped enable the creation of our Country.
